West Exe take over Colyton

Colyton is proving the tournament to enter for West Exe Youth as this year saw the U9s and U10s triumph, taking the trophy home.

This years youngest West Exe team and tournament newbies U7’s , although no winners trophy was available, still managed to remain unbeaten all day, only coming unstuck when they faced each other!

West Exe U10s celebrating victory, pipping 15 other teams to the trophy. Played out of their skin all day only conceding 1 goal in total. Worrying time in the group stages when 2 players fell unwell, with no subs to fall back on, they threw back on the blue shirt and powered to victory.

West Exe U9s returning to the tournament as champions go unbeaten against 6 other teams, managing to win this tournament for a 2nd successive year winning 2-0 in the final. The U7s looking smart and gaining their first taste of tournament fun. Going unbeaten is no mean feat, the future is looking bright for Steve and his team.

To have 2 teams winning back to back tournament here and now the U7s looking strong too, we may not be allowed back in Colyton……..

03/04/2019 U10s vs N Tawton Cup Semi Final

Exeter and District Cup Semi Final

Westexe U10s vs North Tawton City

Under floodlights at the great facility provided by Axminster Town late on Wednesday evening, our Under 10s prepared to face North Tawton.

The nerves of the occasion were clear to see but we worked hard at relaxing the squad in the hope their performances would match those of late.

The game kicked off late (8:20pm) and the contest was good. North Tawton better at keeping the ball but faced with a solid defence had their own problems dealing with the Westexe break, much akin to the Salah, Firmino and Mane trio now in the form of Charlie, Jayden and Lucas.

HT 0-0

The 2nd half saw North Tawton turn the screw and net their first after 5 minutes. The pain in the Westexe players faces was instantly clear to see and unfortunately that saw the beginning of the end of the Wolves fantastic cup run.

Nothing should be taken away from our boys in blue and neither should anything be taken from North Tawton, booking their deserved place in the Final as the better team on the day.

The day was topped with some lovely words from North Tawton Coach Steve who picked the boys up after a crushing defeat.

Great support from the sidelines and a fantastic experience for all involved.

Final score 0-5

27/03/2019 U13s Youth vs Ottery Semi Final

LEAGUE CUP SEMI FINAL

WEST EXE YOUTH v OTTERY ST MARY YOUTH u13’S

Wednesday 27th March 2019 K.O. 6:30pm

Report by Geoff Bland

After winning against Ottery at the weekend we now have the challenge of playing them again in the semi final of the cup. The game was played on a mutual ground at Cullompton under flood lights. Even though we won on Saturday we knew this would be another difficult game with both our new signings cup tied but we had Thomas returning in defence and Seb up front so the anticipation was high. The game started well with an early run down the right wing by James who crossed the ball in to Ellen but shot just wide. The game settled down with Ottery gaining more of the possession and forcing our defence deeper. In the tenth minute Ottery had a corner. The ball was whipped into our box which West Exe dealt with an excellent clearance header. The ball landed outside the box for an Ottery player to hit a low, hard shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net. 0-1. A couple of minutes later Levi had a long range shot that went just wide. On twenty two minutes Archie has a great run down the right and puts in a lovely cross forcing an Ottery defender to header the ball away. The remainder of the first half saw Ottery closing down our players quickly and pushing forward with every opportunity whilst West Exe tried hitting them on the break. Mickie and Levi both have a few long range attempts that go wide or over the crossbar. Right on half time Mickie takes a corner and James jumps up high to header but it goes inches wide.

HT 0-1

The game plateaued for a while at the start of the second half until in the tenth minute the Ottery keeper saved a 20 yard shot from Ellen. A couple of minutes later sees some lovely West Exe play. James runs past three Ottery players and passes the ball out to Mickie who shoots a hard shot into the back of the net but the flag went up for offside. Another couple of minutes later and Mickie takes a free kick, whipping the ball into the box. A mad scramble ensues, climaxing with a shot by Seb that gets cleared. In the sixteenth minute Ottery play a through ball but our keeper Thomas manages to tackle the player at the cost of being studded on the foot. James claims the loose ball and in an attempt to clear he pulls a muscle in his leg. After eighteen minutes Ottery hit a long range shot from outside the box. The ball bobbles in front of Thomas, hits his leg and through into the goal. 0-2. James struggles on for a little while longer but his injury forces him to come off. In the twenty sixth minute Ottery shoot forcing Thomas to make a great save, the ball rebounds for Ottery to have another go which Thomas then smothers. The tempo died off in the last few minutes with Ottery looking to hold onto their lead. West Exe tried pushing forward but it just wasn’t their day.

Full Time 0-2

West Exe should be extremely proud in reaching the semi final. They played some outstanding football along the way and if they continue to improve like they have done over the past few years then it’s only a matter of time until we win the cup.

North Tawton United vs West Exe Wolves U10s

Cup QF

Match Report by Simon Piper

It was clear to see on arrival that nerves had the potential to get the better of some of our players. The warm up focused on eliminating these fears and a word in the ear of many to believe in their ability and not to fear making mistakes.

The players picked their starting line up and formation, opting for the favoured 3-2-1 Christmas tree formation.

Play started at 10:30am with a strong start from Wolves, quickly settling into their usual passing game; the confidence was there as I had hoped!

North Tawton also started well and the central number 8 was quickly proving to be a handful with his ability to side step a tackle with ease.

After having a couple of shots at the Tawton goal the first stand out moment was from keeper Josh’s decision to sprint out of his area to perfectly eliminate a 1 on 1 opportunity for the Tawton striker, charging out with an intent that made sure the ball was his and no-one else’s.

From the subsequent throw-in Westexe managed to immediately win back possession and play through all three zones of Def, Mid and Attack for Charlie to grab the first goal and ease the nerves of the parents!

0-1 West Exe

The goal seemed to fuel the boys desire to attack, and attack they did!

Jayden picking up the ball and confidently beating his man every time he gained possession and expertly offloading the ball to his midfield partner Lewis or striker Charlie, the 3 of them very in tune with each other’s runs.

Half time came to applause from all spectators who were being treated to quite the spectacle of youth football.

More words of encouragement and a half time orange saw the boys restart the second half now facing down the slightly sloped pitch.

North Tawton were far from beat although they simply could not break through the brick wall built by Finnley and captain Lucas controlled expertly well by CB Ben.

Bens ability to pickpocket every attacking player was a joy to watch, a player very in control of his feet with excellent timing of a tackle and interception. Even when Tawton managed to get past Ben, Lucas was on hand to sweep up behind showing everyone how well they have gelled as a team.

In Central Midfield the engine room was working hard with Lewis seemingly in 2 places at the same time all of the time! Breaking forwards and recovering with power and pace.

It was from a corner which Lewis headed the ball into the net 0-2 West Exe.

The clock was ticking, the semi final within reach. A North Tawton player fired a shot from distance, deflected up off a defender and out of reach of Josh to make it 1-2.

West Exe defended well and saw the game out deserved winners against a very good North Tawton side. We now face Brixington, Stoke Hill or North Tawton City in the Semi finals on 2nd March

A very very proud coach.

05/01/2019 – U9s vs Culm Valley

Westexe U9’s 2-0 Culm Valley

After speaking to the Culm Valley manager beforehand it became apparent both teams were unbeaten in all league & cup fixtures for the season and the game started very evenly as expected. Westexe gradually got on top with their pressing game and created the better of the opportunities but the best chance fell to the visitors on the counterattack & Presley had to be alert to clear. A few minutes before HT Jaxon got fouled just outside the area & stepped up to drill a shot into the roof of the net, just what the game needed & what Westexe deserved. The 2nd half was much of the same with Westexe ruing a few missed chances & just when Culm was having a little pressure in the last few minutes pushing for the equaliser it was Westexe that had a counterattack which saw Owen running through, in true Owen fashion he picked his spot and buried it to make the last few minutes quite enjoyable for the parents and coaches.

Friendly

Westexe 2-1 Culm Valley

This game was played in a really fun & enjoyable spirit and also gave an opportunity for all of the boys to be running around on a freezing morning, we agreed to play 10v10 which meant at times it was a very cramped to be playing flowing football but the competitive edge was still their.

Culm took a very early lead in this one but that didn’t shake our boys. Just before HT again, Ellis this time managed to dink the ball past the outstretched GK so we went into HT level, just what the boys deserved. 2nd half was very even & the tackles were flying in from both teams but nobody could get the 3rd goal until with seconds to go Pres who had come out of goal for the 2nd half calmly slotted in past the GK. The boys were buzzing after such a dramatic win at the death.

Well Done Westexe!!! Very proud coaches & parents!!!
