03/03/2019 Newton Fire vs West Exe Girls U12s

Newton Fire Girls U12 vs West Exe Girls U12  – 03/03/19

A full team of 12 eager girls paid a  very wet and windy visit to Newton Abbot for the final league match of the season.  Despite the rain, the pitch was very playable. Phoebe was kept busy immediately and saved some spectacular shots over the bar from free-kicks and long-distance attempts. Newton Fire whirlwind striker Cody did not have it all her own way with some robust interceptions from Maisy and Suki and some good marking from the other girls.

Jess had an amusing battle with a Newton opponent which saw her loose the ball to a tackle but catch the opponent up and stop the ball, pirouette 180 degrees and make off in the opposite direction! A great piece of athleticism and grit Jess! Newton had the better half and 3 goals from Cody made it 3-0 at half-time.

The second half saw a still enthused side try to pull it back. Misha had a shot on goal. Meanwhile, Cody got another 2 in making it 5-0.

In what we now know as “the magical 10 minutes” that seems to happen whenever we are losing badly the girls collectively went forward on full-attack mode and Rayanna got one through the goalkeeper’s legs from a long-distance Maisy pass. Beth bashed another one in a few minutes later. Sophia also had a good strike at goal and was unlucky for it not to go in.

The “10 minutes” were up and Cody got another one in from a superb long-distance shot making it 6-2.

Special mention to new girls Lilly, Amelia and Emily who all got stuck in and contributed strongly. For some, it was their first ever competitive match. Well done girls.

Woman of the match went to Rayanna.

Message from manger Martin.

The girls were outstanding in today’s match. 1 goal should of been disallowed. I couldn’t be more prouder of a great growing bunch of young girls we have. They didn’t stop today and the new girls should be so proud, they have fitted in so well and done so well in there first match.

Onto the 9v9 😀. Keep up the good work ladies.

06/01/2019 U12s Girls 0-2 Culm Sampford

West Exe Girls U12  vs Culm Sampford U12 – 06/01/19

A fresh but dry start to the New Year as West Exe entertained Culm Sampford at Barton Playing Fields. Play was fairly even from the start with some pressing and connected football from Sampford leading to a few chances that kept Phoebe busy. A nice knock-on ball from Maisy to Jess led to an early chance. Jess had a great game and it will surely not be long before she scores or assists. Beth battled with her opposite number at Right Back and it was great to see her driving the ball down the line on several occasions.  A foul and indirect free kick close to the goal-mouth was scrambled away and half-time ended at 0-0 and still all to play for.

Within a few minutes of the second half Sampford scored and the pace of the game slowed somewhat. Suki showed off her dribbling and ball procession skills that improve every match. Maisy made some great interceptions, picking the optimum moment to take the ball off the opposing player like a lion hunting down a gazelle. Misha was her usual animated self, working hard and causing problems for the opposition which led to a couple of good attempts at goal.

Sampford scored again and although West Exe had some good play including Rayanna hitting the post in the last few minutes of the game it was not to be. A fair result, 2-0 to Sampford.

(Wo)Man-of the match went to Bethany for new new-found confidence and aggressive tackling. Well done Beth!

Match report

West Exe started the game looking like they were determined to give their all in the final, winning the ball back straight from Newton’s kick off. Five passes later, and just 60 seconds gone, they were 1-0 up, with Charley calmly sliding the ball past the keeper.

It was soon to be 2-0: Charley scoring again with just 10 minutes gone. It looked like there was no stopping them, but Newton started to put some pressure on stand-in keeper, Kayleigh, with 3 corners in quick succession; however she was up to the task of keeping them at bay.

The game was now end to end; there must be more goals to come! Ten minutes left of the first half, and Newton score; West Exe still look the stronger side playing up the slope.

Can they take advantage in the second half playing down hill?

Half time.

The girls were happy to still have a lead. Would a double substitution at half time change things?

West Exe kick off the second half. Wow! Inside 60 seconds the ball is in the back of the net. Charley’s done it again. 3-1, no one can stop her on this form!

West Exe take control of the game, going 4-1 up. They are working great as a team. Newton fight back with a goal the keeper had no chance to save, smashed into the top corner. 4-2.

West Exe must like centres, scoring again inside 2 minutes, taking it to 5-2.

Hand ball! Newton Fire get a penalty. Is there a fight back on? The score is now 5-3.

West Exe still don’t look nervous and continue to play a good game. Fifteen minutes left, another penalty to Newton. This could be a game changer…

Saved! Kayleigh stays calm to make a great save; the girls are congratulating her. West Exe break and score to make it 6-3.

The crowd are getting behind both teams. Are there any more goals with 10 minutes left?

Yes! West Exe score to bring it up to 7-3. Newton look like they have no answer to them today. Five minutes left and then it’s 8-3. What a goal feast we have had today!

Final whistle blows. It’s a victory for West Exe. 8-3 winners.
